ZUNRAY Yoga Palma Mallorca

Zunray Yoga studio was Mallorca’s leading yoga studio in the center of Palma from 2010 until 2021.

A brief history:

Francesca and Roeland 2014

Zunray owners Francesca Zuñiga and Roeland Raymakers started Zunray Yoga on Calle Brondo (currently Brondo Architect Hotel) in 2010. They came to live on Mallorca from Madrid the year before, where Francesca had been founder and co-owner of City Yoga, Spain’s biggest yoga studio at the time. The start of Zunray seemed a logical move with all the experience brought from Madrid. The studio on Calle Brondo already had a track record as a yoga studio, initially set up by German celebrities Ursula Karven and Kimberly Steeb but had been closed for some time. The yoga room was impressive, 150m2, 6 meter high ceilings, a wonderful terrace for community events, but it came with many challenges: unusable spaces, noise, rent cost, no heating, no cooling….

In 2012 we had the opportunity to move to a new location. The alley of Calle Sant Feliu 17. Initially it was just the big yoga shala but shortly after an extra yoga room, which also functioned as holistic playschool Zunray Kids for 5 years and the reception and massage space were added. The magical peaceful environment of the alley and the interior design of the room, the works of Antonio Obrador, made Zunray the perfect unique yoga location. Apart from a full schedule of weekly yoga classes there were always things going on at Zunray. International guest teachers were welcomed for workshops and teacher trainings. Zunray developed it’s own teacher training by the hands of Zaira Leal and recurring signature events like the 30-day challenge and the Thanksgving community dinner are part of it’s legacy that people still talk about.

And then the pandemic hit. Within two days, classes were being offered online and the community was tighter than ever but after 10 weeks of lockdown the really challenge started. It was May on Mallorca, people were allowed of their houses again so online attendance declined but little was know about the virus still and unfortunately students were reluctant to come back to the studio. In September attendance picked up, but another forced closure in January 2021 and the posterior rules that were set out regarding facemasks and the ever changing maximum numbers of students made business impossible. It was in this time we met Mariana Salinas who had a wonderful vision for the future of Zunray 17. She had started her tiny Kundaline yoga studio Sadhana Works just before the pandemic in Bendinat and was ready for deeper waters. With pain in our heart but with gratitude for all the blessings received, we understood that is was time to pass the baton on. We’re happy that the studio maintains it’s purpose and Mariana continues it’s magic in her own way.
